iPhone Date crash, Windows 10 update history, and Intel overclocking

This has been a fairly interesting week in computer news, first of all, a number of articles about Intel stopping motherboard manufactuers from allowing overclocking on their non K series CPUs.  I can certainly see why Intel would want to stop people from overclocking their cheaper lines of CPUs, They want people to buy the higher-end K series or X series.  This only appears to apply to the Skylake line of CPUs, older CPUs cannot be overclocked unless their in intels K or X series.  There are also some articles talking about Intel and Microsoft pushing ‘microcode’ updates to the CPUs via Windows Update to make sure that they can’t be overclocked.  In the end it would be best to purchase the more expensive CPU if you want to overclock.  Here’s a more in-depth article about this, though the title could be a bit … misleading.  The mircocode update hasn’t been pushed out yet.

On more Windows Update related news, Microsoft has started posting the full changelogs for Windows 10 updates.  This is a very good change, as it will allow IT Staff to see what MSFT is pushing out before they deploy it to their orginizations.  I wonder why they thought that not showing people what has been changed was a good idea, every previous version of Windows has had a site where you can see their update history.

The site looks a bit spartan, but here is the link if you want to see the changelogs.

And finally, Apples 64 bit IOS devices have a very huge bug…

Cities Skylines Update 1.1.0

A game that I’ve been having quite a bit of fun with has had a major update, it does break some things, but for the most part, the new features are very nice.

The biggest new feature is tunnels, which I haven’t seen in a city sim since Sim City 4.  This is very nice, since tunnelled roads appear to work in the same way as surface roads or bridges (except without those blasted support pillars) allowing you to hide some of the messes that can come up as you upgrade the roads throughout your city.

They also added an European map theme which allows you to have more interesting looking cities.

Overall it’s a very nice update, it fixes many bugs, such as ships glitching over land, and adds a few new features.

If you want more information about the update, Click Here.

Apple Facing 20 Percent Price Hike on Samsung Processors | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

Apple is getting to find out what happens when you attack your suppliers…

Apple is going to have to dig a little deeper into its pockets for every iPhone and iPad it produces, according to a new report.

MarketWatch, citing South Korean daily newspaper Chosun Ilbo, reported on Sunday that Samsung has increased the price of mobile processors supplied to Apple for use in its iDevices by 20 percent. Chosun Ilbo apparently heard about the price hike from an unnamed person familiar with negotiations between Apple and Samsung.

“Samsung Electronics recently asked Apple for a significant price raise in (the mobile processor known as) application processor,” the source said, according to MarketWatch.

As could be expected, the new price didn’t initially sit well with Apple. “Apple first disapproved it, but finding no replacement supplier, it accepted the (increase),” the source added.

I must say that it really wasn’t smart for Apple to attack Samsung over the design of some of their older phones, sure they got some money from Samsung in the US and Germany, but now they’re probably going to pay it back with higher fees from Samsung, which is a major supplier of parts for the iPhone and iPad.  I wonder what’s going to happen next.

Steve Jobs is dead

The world lost a great man yesterday…  Steve Jobs, one of the co-founders of Apple, has died.

I may not have used many products made by his company, but I still do have to say that he was one of the greatest minds of his time, without him, I don’t know where computers would be today… though they probably wouldn’t be quite as far along as they are now.

Microsoft has a new marketing campaign

Microsoft has started a marketing campaign against Apple, http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/pc-vs-mac.aspx , and the Mac users don’t seem too happy.  I, myself am a Linux Person, and I remember Microsoft’s ‘Get The Facts’ campaign, which did the exact same thing to Linux, annoying lots of Linux users.  (Well they did have the top link on the Google search page for Linux…)

Looking at their new site, it appears that this time, it’s just trying to keep people that are on the fence from switching away from windows.  Those who have already switched are not likely to change back, I know that, because I switched to Linux a few years ago, and only keep Windows around for those few games that don’t run on Linux, through Wine or other means…

As time passes, I see Microsoft becoming irrelevant because everything seems to be moving to the ‘cloud’.  I like the fact that I can easily move from computer to computer without needing a flash drive, but I still like having a local copy of my data.  On the ‘facts’ that microsoft has on their site, most of them seem to do with shortcomings in their software, which requires users of other systems and programs to do workarounds, because Microsoft Products refuse to work with Mac or Linux formats, but Mac and Linux can work with Microsoft formats.
