Computer tip of the week

Use Virtailization software to run multiple Operating systems on your computer

Programs like Virtualbox, or VMWare allow you to install other Operating systems on your computer, so you can try another system out without fear of damaging your computer.

Cool Videos

Cool Video about our Solar System, all of the known asteroids found since 1980…

This is what happens when you get magnets close to an old CRT TV or Computer Monitor
This doesn’t happen as easily anymore, LCD, and LED Screens don’t get effected by magnets like the older CRT Screens.

Wow, I guess that this TV Probably doesn’t work quite right anymore…

Ubuntu 10.10

So it will be that time of the year soon, the newest version of Ubuntu appears to be shaping up very well. This version is getting a lot of new features. they’re working very hard on removing bugs, and it even has a slightly different interface.  I’m looking forward to the newest Ubuntu.

Useful computer tip of the week

Clean your computer on a regular basis.  This means keep the harddrive defragmented, remove old software, temporary files, and clean your registry.

CCleaner is a good program for removing the old software, temporary files, and the registry.

Also you should clean your computer’s interior as well.  Dust buildup can clog the fans, short out the electronics, and it has a chance of causing a fire. (Just know that for it to get to this point, your computer will have to have gone a number of years without cleaning.)

First analyze for files that can be removed, then remove them, then clean your regestry.  Doing those two things, your computer should become faster.

Changes in Computing

Hmmm… Computers have changed a lot havn’t they?  I remember when we got a Gateway brand computer with Windows 95 installed, for over $1000.00 (I’m not sure on the number, I was a little kid at the time) It may have been powerful for it’s time, but now it can’t even compete with the lowest end computer from today. (Although… it does seem faster, as operating systems have been bloated with more features over the years)

Now, two years ago, I got a high end gaming laptop for just over $1000.00, it is a fast computer, but I need to work at keeping it’s copy of Windows 7 from getting gunked up, and slowing down…. hmm, that reminds me, I need to clean the filter on my vaccum cleaner. :)

My friend bought a new laptop yesterday, and asked me if I could get it to go any faster, it’s a quad core laptop, with 4 GB of RAM, and it was MUCH slooooooooweerrrr then my dual core laptop from two years ago, or even the Gateway computer from over 10 years ago!

Turns out that between Windows becoming heavier, and useless software being installed, many Windows-based computers are getting slower, even though they have faster, yet cheaper, hardware.  I was able to speed his computer up by removing unneeded software from the computer, including a second antivirus program, then the computer became quite fast.

I find it kind of freaky that the hardware is becoming cheaper, but it’s becoming harder to do any computing at a good speed, since most new computers have tons of bloatware pre-installed, which you have to remove, or else the computer can be pretty well useless.

Thank you for reading this post :)

Microsoft has a new marketing campaign

Microsoft has started a marketing campaign against Apple, http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/pc-vs-mac.aspx , and the Mac users don’t seem too happy.  I, myself am a Linux Person, and I remember Microsoft’s ‘Get The Facts’ campaign, which did the exact same thing to Linux, annoying lots of Linux users.  (Well they did have the top link on the Google search page for Linux…)

Looking at their new site, it appears that this time, it’s just trying to keep people that are on the fence from switching away from windows.  Those who have already switched are not likely to change back, I know that, because I switched to Linux a few years ago, and only keep Windows around for those few games that don’t run on Linux, through Wine or other means…

As time passes, I see Microsoft becoming irrelevant because everything seems to be moving to the ‘cloud’.  I like the fact that I can easily move from computer to computer without needing a flash drive, but I still like having a local copy of my data.  On the ‘facts’ that microsoft has on their site, most of them seem to do with shortcomings in their software, which requires users of other systems and programs to do workarounds, because Microsoft Products refuse to work with Mac or Linux formats, but Mac and Linux can work with Microsoft formats.

Viruses, Virus Checkers, and Disk Corruption

… It’s been a while since I last posted here, isn’t it?

This has been one strange day. First I choose to install Ubuntu Linux on and old laptop laying around in the house, and while I’m installing some applications my mom calls me.

I go into the TV Room and see a ‘Virus Checker’ running on her computer, I immidatly recognize that as a Virus, it already had killed the copy of AVG on the computer, and the Windows Task Manager. I shut it down without letting it go through the shutdown procedure, hopefully to stop it from rooting itself in any deeper than it was, and booted it off of the same Ubuntu CD I had used in the old laptop. I copied all of the Documents to a portable Harddrive, and started a Virus Check through ClamAV

I go for a walk, and decide to install AVG For Linux on my Desktop to check the drive that I copied the documents to. During the install, the installer started showing a large number of errors, then my machine crashed. X_X

AVG had CORRUPTED the Partition that Ubuntu was installed in!

It took a fair amount of time and 4 reboots before I could get back to a usable desktop, My documents are fine, since I save them to a different partition, but all of this has caused this day to be … eventful.

Wow… Strange day.

Multiple neat things

Today was the official release of Windows 7, I think that Microsoft has figured out what it did wrong with Vista, as 7 is much better.  I don’t think that they’ll pull many people that changed to Mac or Linux back easily though.

In other news, Ubuntu 9.10 is due to be out in 7 days … 1 week after windows 7!

I must say that Ubuntu Karmic Koala  (9.10) is shaping up very well, it looks much better, has many more wallpapers… overall it will be a great OS as well.

On a non Operating system topic, Anyone that comes here should look at this neat video.

To see the video in higher quality, go here: Big Buck Bunny

This video was made with Blender on the Ubuntu Linux Operating System. Neat that free software can do so much in the hands of experienced people!
