Lots of Minecraft VR News today

Today 3 Minecraft VR related things happened.

The first, and probably the largest one is that the official Minecraft VR version came out today, it uses Minecraft Windows 10 edition, and you need to own a copy of Minecraft Windows 10 edition to play the VR edition.  As an interesting sidenote, if you have the old Java/PC version of Minecraft, you can still get the Windows 10 edition for free, which will also get you the VR version for free.

As a sidenote, the official Minecraft VR version is exclusive to Oculus, It doesn’t appear that Vive users will get to play this version, at least for now…

The next news item is that the people behind the older Minecrift VR mod for Minecraft was notified by Mojang that they are to stop using the Minecrift name, as it’s too similar to Minecraft and could confuse people, and they can no longer use their domain, minecraft-vr.com.  They were told that they could rename the mod and continue development, as long as the new mod didn’t start with the word ‘Mine’.  The developers of Minecrift decided that they are tired of working on that mod anyways and are stopping all development of the mod, and shutting it down.  It’s a sad day as Minecrift was one of the first games I played on my Oculus DK1 back in the day.  It was very fun back then.  The DK2 made it more interesting as I attempted to look through smaller spaces, and would glitch through various blocks on purpose.

The final Minecraft VR news item for today, The ViveCraft mod released a big update for their 1.10.2 version, they say that they’ll be bringing the new changes to their 1.7.10 version as well, but are having trouble with some of the features as of this time.

Personally after playing some of the official ‘Minecraft VR edition’, Minecrift and Vivecraft, I highly prefer the Vivecraft mod.  Roomscale movement makes the game so much more interesting, and some utility mods can help a lot as well.  The official Minecraft VR edition does have the largest viewing distance, and runs extremly smoothly, but there are too many things that I miss from the Java version to get too invested in it.

Well, that’s all for now, I’m looking forward to doing more mining & crafting tomorrow night. 🙂

Minecraft on the Vive

Well, someone has ported Minecraft, via the Minecrift mod to the HTC Vive headset.  The motion controls look very interesting to me…

Now I’m really looking forward to my Vive arriving, not sure when it’ll happen though.  Thanks to the ‘Sold out’ error that appeared to many people, including myself, when the vive preorders started I couldn’t place my order until around 18 minutes after preorders opened.  Due to that, I appear to have a wait ahead of me.  Probably not too long though, people who placed their orders ~10 minutes after preorders opened have been getting their shipping notifications.

Dig Build Live 360

The fine folks that are making the Dig Build Live have made a … interesting… 360 video.  As with last time, i’ll probably work best in Google Chrome, though it appears that Firefox has added 360 video support.  Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge (For those Windows 10 users out there…) do not support 360 videos at this time.

You should also be able to view it on your smartphone, using the Google Chrome browser, the Youtube App, or the Google Cardboard App.

Minecraft Windows 10 Edition (And Windows 10) are out.

Well, today is an interesting day, A new version of Minecraft has been released, alongside Microsoft’s new OS.  You can get the Minecraft Windows 10 edition Beta via the Windows store on Windows 10.  If you already have the PC Edition of Minecraft, you can get the Windows 10 edition for free.  You can get the instructions at the Mojang site.

In all honesty, it’s nice getting another version of Minecraft for free, but it isn’t quite as much fun as the PC edition of Minecraft.  Especially since I like playing with a lot of mods and I also like playing on Linux whenever possible. (Sadly the Minecrift mod requires Windows 7 or 8…  10 will be compatible eventually.)

Oh yeah, Also today is the release day for Windows 10.  Everyone that reserved their upgrades will start getting it in the near future.  Otherwise I think that that’s all of the news I have right now.

Mojang announces new version of Minecraft

Mojang has announced Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta, which will be available through the Windows 10 store on July 29…  A day after Windows 10 is offically released.

You can read the post on the Mojang website.

From what they’re saying, Windows 10 Edition is based off of Minecraft PE, and players on the Windows 10 edition will be able to play multiplayer with both other MCPE and Minecraft XBox one editions.  I do find it strange, both the XBox one and PE versions of minecraft have features which the other one doesn’t have.  I wonder how that’ll work, I guess time will tell.

The new edition will be free to people who already own the PC version of Minecraft, if you don’t have the PC Version, it’ll cost you $10 for the beta version (Eventually the price will go up)

I feel sad that they don’t have Linux on the list of platforms that Minecraft is available on, as I generally play Minecraft on Linux, as it seems to run a bit more smoothly there.  Here’s their list of systems that you can run Minecraft on.

Minecraft is available on Windows, Mac, Windows Phone, iOS, Android, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PS Vita, and now, Windows 10.

Oh and Mojang also showed a preview of the new game – Minecraft: Story Mode, made by Telltale games.

I haven’t played any of their games, but I have heard that Telltale games does make some nice story-driven games. I wonder what their Minecraft story will be like.

Well anyways, have a nice day.

Mojang is ending the development of Scrolls

In all honesty, I didn’t know much about Scrolls, aside from it being a new project that caused Zenimax to attempt to sue Mojang.  In the end, I think that the settlement that came out from that may be part of the reason that Microsoft is having Mojang discontinue that game.  From what I can tell, usually when you license something, such as the ‘Scrolls’ trademark, you have to pay a fee of some sort.  Between that, and their cash cow being Minecraft, not Scrolls tells me that this probably was going to happen in the not so distant future after the acquisition was finished.
